Are you spending hundreds, even thousands, on bar exam prep materials year after year, only to find yourself stuck in the same place? It’s a cycle I see too often—smart, determined bar takers pouring money into countless supplements, yet still falling short of their goal. If this sounds familiar, you might be falling into a trap I call “Penny Wise but Pound Foolish”.
Have you ever wondered if you’re missing the forest for the trees in your bar exam journey? You might be making decisions that seem wise in the moment but are costing you far more in the long run.
Every administration that passes without you securing your law license isn’t just a delay—it’s a costly one. At the moment, it’s hard to see the bigger picture. You’re focused on the immediate costs and might feel stuck, unable to justify a larger investment. But here’s how you can shift that mindset…
Reason #1: It’s Not Aligning with Your Personal Drivers
One major reason many bar takers struggle to invest in what they truly need is because it doesn’t align with their personal drivers or motivators. This isn’t just about bar prep; it’s about your life and career as a whole.
You might be hesitating to invest in a program that could help you pass because it doesn’t feel like a priority. If passing the bar isn’t a priority anymore you really need to evaluate how your spending your time and energy. Like, why are you reading this article?
If you find that your career path truly isn’t aligning with your values anymore, it’s time to reevaluate. I have a workshop called Bar Motivation that can help you reignite your passion for law or even rework your goals so that they align with who you are today.
Now, if you still think you’d desire to pas the bar and just can’t justify spending money on the things that will truly help, we are missing something crucial. If you’re not counting the cost of failing, you’re losing out, big time. Saving $2,000 today might cost you $20,000 tomorrow.
Reason #2: You Don’t Feel Like You Deserve It
Another reason you might be stuck is that, deep down, you don’t feel like you deserve success. This is more common than you might think and can stem from past experiences—maybe from childhood or a relationship where someone’s words or actions made you feel unworthy.
This feeling of unworthiness can seep into every aspect of your life, from the jobs you apply for, to the way you handle toxic work environments. If you don’t feel worthy of passing the bar, you might subconsciously sabotage yourself, making decisions that keep you stuck in a cycle of failure and frustration.
If this resonates with you, I have a simple exercise to help start shifting that mindset.
Create a Wins List on your phone. Every day for the next 30 days, write down three to four ways you’re winning, no matter how small. Did you clear the sink today? That’s a win. Did you go for a walk or get some study time in? Those are wins too. Celebrate these small victories, and you’ll start seeing yourself in a new light.
Let’s get you on the path to success today.
